What are WordPress development services?

WordPress development services cover building, extending and maintaining websites on WordPress, the open-source content management system. That includes custom themes and Gutenberg blocks, plugin development, Elementor or Divi builds, WooCommerce stores, performance and security work, and migrations. It suits businesses that want full ownership of their site and access to a huge plugin ecosystem.

Custom WordPress development we deliver

WordPress theme development

Block themes built on theme.json, or classic PHP themes when your setup calls for one, designed from your Figma files with no leftover demo content or unused scripts. Editors get locked patterns and preset styles that keep every new page on-brand.

Custom Gutenberg blocks

Blocks for the content your team publishes most: team grids, pricing tables, comparison charts, calls to action, maps. Built with the block API, so editors see the real design while they type instead of a gray box of fields.

ACF and custom content structures

Custom post types, taxonomies and Advanced Custom Fields for structured content such as properties, team members, case studies or events. That structure powers filterable archives, directories and related-content sections without anyone hand-coding pages.

Plugin development

When no plugin does the job, or three plugins each half-do it, we write one: integrations with your CRM, ERP or booking system, admin tools, REST API endpoints and scheduled tasks. The code follows WordPress coding standards and uses hooks, so core and theme updates don't overwrite it.

Elementor and Divi builds

For teams that want visual editing, we build in Elementor or Divi with global colors, fonts and reusable templates set once, which keeps pages consistent and the site lighter than a typical builder site. Need an Elementor developer to untangle a site someone else built? We do that too.

WooCommerce development

Custom product types, configurable options, subscriptions, wholesale pricing, and checkout changes built on WooCommerce's Cart and Checkout blocks. We keep custom code compatible with High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS) and connect payment, shipping and inventory systems. Comparing WooCommerce with Shopify or Wix? Our e-commerce development team can lay out the trade-offs.

Speed optimization

We measure Core Web Vitals first, then fix what's actually slow: oversized images, render-blocking scripts, plugin overload, uncached database queries or underpowered hosting. Typical fixes include page and object caching, WebP or AVIF images, script cleanup and a CDN.

Security hardening and updates

Core, theme and plugin updates tested on staging before they reach your live site. Least-privilege user roles, two-factor login, a web application firewall, and off-site backups. If the worst has already happened, we clean up malware and close the hole it came through.

Migrations and headless WordPress

Moves to WordPress from another CMS, between hosts, or into a multisite network, with redirects mapped URL by URL. Or keep WordPress as your editors' back office and put a fast front end on it through WPGraphQL. Our Next.js development team builds those headless front ends.

When WordPress is the right choice, and when it isn't

WordPress makes sense when:

  • You publish a lot of content and want full control over hosting, data and code.
  • You rely on a plugin or integration that only exists in the WordPress ecosystem.
  • You want an open-source store you host yourself, with WooCommerce.
  • Your team or agency already knows WordPress well.
  • Your site has years of rankings and URLs you don't want to disturb.

It's probably not the best fit if you want zero upkeep. WordPress needs regular updates, backups and hosting decisions. A hosted platform such as Wix Studio takes those off your plate, and we can migrate your WordPress site to Wix cleanly. If your project is really a custom application, a coded framework will usually serve you better than bending WordPress.

Why choose Wix Engine for WordPress development services

We don't need to sell you WordPress

We also build on Wix, Webflow, Shopify and Next.js, across 50+ technologies. If another platform fits your goals better, we'll say so on the first call.

Experience at volume

2,000+ projects delivered since 2014 for clients in 15+ countries. Most WordPress problems we're asked to fix, from plugin conflicts to broken checkouts, follow familiar patterns.

Fewer plugins, cleaner code

Every plugin is code you have to update and trust. We use well-maintained plugins where they genuinely save time and write lean custom code where they don't, so your site has fewer moving parts.

Staging first, always

We never develop on your live site. Changes are built and tested on a staging copy under version control, then deployed once you approve.

Clear communication

Email replies within 2–4 business hours, a proposal within 24 hours of your call, an estimate within 48 hours, and an NDA on request.

How much do WordPress development services cost?

Starts from
$400

WordPress projects with Wix Engine start from $400. Focused jobs like theme fixes, a speed tune-up or a single custom block sit at that end. Fully custom themes, WooCommerce stores and large migrations cost more.

What affects the price:

  • Custom theme or page builder a builder site is quicker to produce; a custom block theme takes longer but runs leaner.
  • Templates and blocks the number of unique layouts and custom blocks your editors need.
  • WooCommerce complexity product types, pricing rules, subscriptions and the systems your store connects to.
  • Content migration the number of posts, media files and redirects to move.
  • Existing problems cleaning up a hacked or plugin-heavy site adds time before new work can start.

Work with us on a fixed-price project, a monthly care plan, or hourly at $45/hour (minimum 40-hour block). For ongoing capacity, you can also hire a dedicated WordPress developer.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does a custom WordPress website cost?

WordPress work with Wix Engine starts from $400 for focused jobs like fixes or a single feature. Fully custom themes, WooCommerce stores and migrations are quoted after a free call, based on the number of templates, custom blocks, integrations and content to move. You'll get an exact estimate within 48 hours.

Should I use Elementor or a custom WordPress theme?

Choose Elementor if your marketing team wants to build new layouts visually and speed of delivery matters most. Choose a custom block theme if performance and long-term maintenance matter more and editors mostly add content to set layouts. A builder site costs less upfront; a custom theme is usually lighter and has fewer plugin dependencies.

Can you speed up my slow WordPress site?

Yes. We measure Core Web Vitals and server response first, then fix the actual causes, usually oversized images, too many plugins, render-blocking scripts, missing caching or weak hosting. You'll see before-and-after measurements. If hosting is the bottleneck, we'll recommend a move and handle the migration.

Can you fix a hacked WordPress site?

Yes. We take a full backup, remove malicious code and rogue users, replace modified core files, then find and close the entry point, often an outdated plugin or a reused password. Afterwards we harden the site with updates, two-factor login and a firewall so it's much harder to break into again.

Do you build custom WooCommerce features?

Yes. We build custom product types, configurators, pricing and discount rules, subscription logic, checkout fields and integrations with payment, shipping, inventory and ERP systems. Custom code is written to stay compatible with WooCommerce updates, including High-Performance Order Storage, so your store doesn't break every time WooCommerce releases a new version.

What is headless WordPress, and do I need it?

Headless WordPress keeps the WordPress admin for editing but serves the website from a separate front end, often Next.js, that pulls content through an API. It gives you more speed and design freedom. Most sites don't need it, though: it costs more to build, and some plugins that change the front end won't work.

Can you move my site to or from WordPress?

Yes, in both directions. We migrate sites onto WordPress from other platforms, between WordPress hosts, and from WordPress to Wix or a headless setup. Every move includes a URL-by-URL redirect map and a check of titles and metadata, so you keep the search visibility you've built.
