What does a Wix app developer do?

A Wix app developer builds software that runs inside Wix rather than on a single site: dashboard pages, site widgets, backend logic and connections to Wix Stores, Bookings and other business apps. Apps can stay private to your own or your clients' sites, or be published on the Wix App Market for any Wix user to install, free or paid.

Custom Wix app development services

Private apps for agencies and multi-site businesses

Build a feature once and install it on every site that needs it. Private apps install on any site you own or collaborate on — from your Wix Studio workspace or an install link — with no App Market review.

Public apps for the Wix App Market

Wix App Market app development from first spec to live listing: extensions, permissions, OAuth, pricing plans, listing copy and screenshots, and the submission itself.

Dashboard pages, plugins and modals

Admin tools in the site owner's Wix dashboard, built with React and the Wix Design System so they look native. Dashboard plugins can also slot into Wix's own screens, such as a panel inside a Wix Stores or Bookings page.

Site widgets and embedded scripts

Draggable widgets site owners place on their pages, and scripts injected into a site's HTML for tracking or chat. We build widgets as custom elements with the Wix CLI so they work on Wix Editor, Wix Studio and Wix Harmony sites.

Backend logic and service plugins

Custom shipping rates, checkout fees, discount triggers, tax calculation, form validation and booking rules, injected into Wix's own flows through service plugins — plus event handlers and custom Wix Automations triggers and actions.

Self-managed apps for SaaS products

A Wix integration puts your SaaS product in front of Wix users. A self-managed app — Wix's current name for a self-hosted app — runs on your infrastructure: you register its iframes, webhooks and endpoints in the Wix app dashboard and sync data through Wix's REST APIs. Building the product itself? See SaaS development.

Wix Blocks apps and framework migrations

As Wix Blocks developers, we maintain and extend existing Blocks apps. One catch: Blocks site widgets and plugins don't install on Wix Harmony sites. To reach Harmony users, we rebuild those widgets with the Wix CLI and, as Wix suggests, add the new version as an extension inside your existing app so you keep your reviews and installs. We also move apps off the Legacy Wix CLI for Apps, which no longer receives updates.

Pricing plans and plan-gated features

Free, freemium, premium and usage-based plans (usage-based billing needs App Market approval). Wix handles billing, but your app must check each site's plan and enable or restrict features to match. We build that logic and the upgrade prompts.

Actions for Wix's AI assistant

Through Wix's App Tools extension, Aria — the AI assistant in the Wix dashboard — can run your app's key actions for site owners.

Wix CLI, self-managed or Wix Blocks: which should your app use?

Wix offers three frameworks, and one app can mix them — each extension can be built a different way.

Wix CLI Self-managed Wix Blocks
Hosting Wix cloud, no extra cost Your own servers Wix cloud, no extra cost
Stack TypeScript, React, Wix Design System, your IDE and git Any language and framework Visual editor plus Velo in an online IDE
Site widgets on Wix Harmony Supported Supported Not supported
Best for Most new apps SaaS companies with an existing backend Quick widgets for Wix Editor and Studio sites; existing Blocks apps

Our default for new apps is the Wix CLI, as Wix recommends. We go self-managed when your app needs your own backend — some service plugins, such as payment providers, require it.

When you need a Wix app developer

  • You're an agency installing the same custom feature on many client sites and maintaining separate copies of the code.
  • You run a SaaS product and Wix users keep asking for an integration.
  • You want a recurring-revenue product on the Wix App Market.
  • Your feature belongs in the Wix dashboard, not only on a public page.
  • Your Blocks app can't reach Wix Harmony users.

If a feature only ever needs to run on one site, an app is usually overkill. Velo code on that site is simpler and cheaper — see our Wix Velo development service.

Why work with Wix Engine as your Wix app developer

The top Wix Partner tier

Wix Engine is a Wix Legend Partner, the highest level of the Wix Partner Program, with 2,000+ projects delivered for clients in 15+ countries.

We build the sites apps run on

Most of our work is building Wix and Wix Studio sites for real businesses, so we see how site owners install and judge apps. That shapes everything from onboarding screens to default settings.

Current frameworks, checked for every editor

New apps go on the Wix CLI, and we check each extension against Wix Harmony compatibility so your app can reach users on all three Wix editors.

Your accounts, your repository

Once the project is paid in full, the app is yours: it's registered in your Wix developer account and the code lives in your git repository, with documentation.

Elavon Europe payment gateway for Wix A client needed to take payments on their Wix site through Elavon Europe. We built a custom payment provider integration with Wix's Payment Provider service plugin (SPI), including the API endpoints and webhooks that pass payment status back to Wix.

Automatic e-receipts through eParagony For a Wix site selling pricing plans, every purchase now creates a fiscal e-receipt through the eParagony.pl API, and the customer gets the receipt link by email automatically. No one on the client's team has to issue receipts by hand.

How much does it cost to build a Wix app?

Starts from
$1,000

Wix app development with us starts from $1,000. A private app with one dashboard page costs far less than a public app with several extensions, billing and a market listing.

What drives the cost:

  • Number and type of extensions a dashboard page is quicker than a service plugin wired into checkout.
  • Hosting model Wix CLI apps run on Wix's cloud at no extra hosting cost; self-managed apps add your own server bill.
  • Integration depth a two-way sync with your platform takes longer than a one-way push.
  • Billing logic plan gating, upgrade flows and usage tracking.
  • Listing and localization screenshots, copy and translated listings for other markets.

We work on fixed-price projects, monthly retainers and hourly at $45/hour (minimum 40-hour block). Send us your app idea and you'll get an estimate within 48 hours.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I build an app for the Wix App Market?

Create an app in the Wix app dashboard, build its extensions — Wix recommends the Wix CLI for most apps — and test it on a development site. Then set up pricing if it's paid, prepare your market listing and submit it. Wix's automated review checks the app against the App Market guidelines before it goes live.

What is the difference between Wix Blocks and the Wix CLI?

Wix Blocks is a visual editor for building app widgets and dashboard pages, with logic written in Velo. The Wix CLI is code-first: TypeScript and React in your own IDE, with git and local testing. Wix hosts both. The key difference today is reach — CLI site widgets work on Wix Harmony, Blocks site widgets don't.

Can I build a private Wix app just for my own sites?

Yes. A private app can be installed on any Wix site you own or collaborate on, through your Wix Studio workspace or an install link, and it skips App Market review. Agencies use private apps to share one feature across many client sites and update it in one place.

How do Wix App Market developers get paid?

Wix handles billing and pays developers monthly. Under Wix's current published terms, you keep 100% of sales revenue in your first year and 80% after that, calculated after a 2.5% transaction fee and sales tax. Your app is responsible for checking each site's plan and limiting features to match. Wix can change these terms, so check its developer documentation for the current figures.

How long does Wix App Market review take?

Usually minutes. Wix runs an automated AI review when you submit and publish an app. If it doesn't pass, blockers appear in your app dashboard; you fix them and submit again. If you disagree with a blocker, you can appeal through Wix support. Later updates are released as new versions without a fresh review.

Do Wix apps work on Wix Harmony?

It depends on the app's extensions. Dashboard extensions, backend extensions and site extensions built with the Wix CLI or self-managed all work on Harmony. Wix Blocks site widgets and plugins and legacy custom elements don't, and legacy iframe widgets have partial support. Those apps still work on Wix Editor and Wix Studio sites.

Who owns the app we build together?

You do, once the project is paid in full. The app is registered under your Wix account, the code sits in your own repository, and you receive documentation so any developer could maintain it after handover. We can sign an NDA before you share your idea.
