What is ecommerce website development?

Ecommerce website development is the work of planning, designing and building an online store: product catalog, cart, checkout, payments, shipping, tax and the integrations behind them. It's for retailers, DTC brands and B2B sellers launching a first store or replacing one that limits growth. With us, you get a working store, tested end to end, on the platform that fits.

Online store development: what we build

Every store needs a catalog, a cart and a checkout. Stores that convert get the details below right — ideally before launch, when fixes are cheapest.

Store design built around buying

Category filters that match how your customers shop, product pages that answer buyers' questions, and layouts designed for phones first.

Custom checkout flows

Extra fields for engraving or delivery notes, gift options, cart-page upsells, purchase-order steps for B2B buyers, local pickup and delivery-date pickers. How far checkout can be changed depends on the platform, so we tell you up front what each one allows.

Payment gateways

Stripe, PayPal, Mollie and Klarna, plus Apple Pay, Google Pay and buy-now-pay-later options where your platform and region support them. We run real test transactions and wire up refunds and payment webhooks so every order matches its payment.

Multi-currency, tax and VAT

Prices in the shopper's own currency, shipping rules per country, and sales tax or VAT calculated at checkout — including VAT on cross-border EU sales. We configure the platform's tax tools or a dedicated tax app; your accountant confirms the rules for your business.

Inventory and order management

Stock synced with your warehouse, POS, ERP or 3PL so you never sell what's already gone, plus order emails, low-stock alerts and fulfillment workflows that replace manual spreadsheets.

Subscriptions and recurring orders

Subscribe-and-save products, replenishment orders, memberships and boxes, with customer self-service to pause, skip or cancel — billed through the platform's subscription tools or a specialist app.

Product configurators and financing

Build-your-own products with live pricing, compatibility rules and visual previews, and financing at checkout so a high-ticket purchase can become a monthly payment. We built both for Purely Solutions.

Content-led commerce

Shops that sit alongside a magazine, lookbooks, video or event bookings, with one design and one customer journey. AGOBAY's artisan shop and editorial magazine work this way.

Speed, SEO and analytics

Clean product URLs, product structured data, optimized images, and Google Analytics 4 ecommerce events from day one, so you can see which products and channels produce revenue.

Store migrations

Changing platforms? We move products, customers and order history where the platforms allow it, with 301 redirects that protect the search traffic you've earned.

Which ecommerce platform should you choose?

There's no single best platform. We build on all four options below, so we have no reason to push any one of them.

Shopify Wix Stores WooCommerce Custom / headless (Next.js)
Best for Product brands that plan to grow through apps and new markets Small and mid-size stores that also need bookings, events or a blog in one place Content-heavy businesses already running WordPress Brands with unusual UX, heavy traffic or complex integrations
Hosting & updates Hosted and maintained by Shopify Hosted and maintained by Wix Self-hosted — you (or we) handle hosting, updates and security Front end hosted separately; commerce engine run by its provider
Running costs Monthly plan plus apps; an extra transaction fee if you don't use Shopify Payments Monthly premium plan; most store features built in Plugin is free; you pay for hosting, premium extensions and upkeep Highest — hosting, commerce backend and developer time for changes
Design control High with a custom theme High, especially in Wix Studio Full Complete
Checkout customization Deepest on Shopify Plus Moderate; extendable with Velo code Full code access Full, within the backend's API
Day-to-day management Non-technical teams Non-technical teams Teams comfortable in WordPress Editors use a CMS; developers handle new features

  • Choose Shopify if…

You sell physical products, want to launch fast, and expect to add features through apps as you grow. Shopify handles hosting, security and checkout reliability; Shopify Plus adds B2B selling and deeper checkout control. Our Shopify development agency team covers setup, custom themes, apps and Plus.

  • Choose Wix Stores if…

You want your store, booking calendar, blog and email marketing in one dashboard, with a visual editor your team can use without a developer. We add Velo code when a feature needs custom logic. Work with our Wix ecommerce developer team on Wix Stores builds.

  • Choose WooCommerce if…

Your business already runs on WordPress and content, you want full ownership of code and data, or you need niche extensions for memberships, marketplaces or B2B pricing. The trade-off: someone has to maintain hosting, plugins and security. See our WooCommerce development services.

  • Choose custom or headless if…

Your store needs an experience templates can't deliver — a deep configurator, unusual navigation, several brands on one codebase — or page speed is a real competitive factor. We build headless storefronts with Next.js development on Shopify or another commerce engine. Want to keep Wix's catalog and checkout? Wix Headless development puts a custom Next.js front end on Wix's commerce backend.

When off-the-shelf isn't enough: custom ecommerce solutions

  • Your product has options, dimensions or compatibility rules a standard variant picker can't express.
  • You sell in several countries and need local currencies, languages and tax handling.
  • Staff re-key orders from the store into your ERP, accounting or shipping software.
  • High-value or B2B orders need financing, quotes or purchase orders.
  • Your store, content and bookings run on separate systems, and customers notice the joins.
  • App after app has slowed the store down, and nobody wants to add features in case something breaks.

If you sell a few dozen products with standard options, a well-configured theme does the job. We'll say so on the first call and keep the rest of your budget for marketing.

How much does ecommerce website development cost?

Starts from
$800

Simple stores start from $800. Complex builds start from $5,000.

What moves the price:

  • Simple store (from $800) an established platform and theme, your branding, a modest catalog, standard payments and shipping.
  • Complex store (from $5,000) custom design, product configurators, subscriptions, multiple currencies, ERP or 3PL integrations, or a headless front end.
  • Catalog size and data quality importing 50 clean products is quick; 5,000 SKUs with messy variant data is not.
  • Custom checkout and pricing logic financing, B2B price lists, bundles and configurators.
  • Integrations each connected system, especially two-way syncs, adds build and testing time.
  • Markets and languages every extra currency, language or tax region needs setup and testing.
  • Design approach adapting a premium theme costs less than a fully custom design.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to build an ecommerce website?

With Wix Engine, simple stores start from $800 and complex builds from $5,000. The final price depends on catalog size, custom checkout or pricing logic, integrations, and how many countries you sell in. Platform subscriptions and paid apps are billed separately by their providers. Share your requirements and we'll send an exact estimate within 48 hours.

How long does it take to build an ecommerce website?

A simple store on Shopify or Wix Stores typically takes 3–6 weeks, while a custom or headless store with integrations usually takes 8–16 weeks. The biggest variable is content: when product data, photos and descriptions are ready on day one, everything moves faster. Your proposal includes a week-by-week timeline.

Is Shopify, Wix or WooCommerce better for ecommerce?

It depends on what you sell and who will run the store. Shopify suits product brands planning to grow with apps and new markets. Wix Stores suits businesses that want a shop, bookings and content in one easy dashboard. WooCommerce suits content-heavy WordPress sites that want full control. We build on all three and recommend based on your needs.

What is headless ecommerce, and do I need it?

Headless ecommerce separates the storefront customers see from the commerce engine that manages products, carts and orders. It gives you complete design freedom and very fast pages, at a higher build and maintenance cost. Most stores don't need it at launch. It starts to pay off with heavy traffic, complex shopping experiences, or several brands and markets.

Can you move my store to a new platform without losing SEO?

We migrate products, customers and, where the platforms allow it, order history, and we set up 301 redirects from every old URL to its new equivalent. Page titles, meta descriptions and structured data come across too. Nobody can guarantee rankings through a migration, but a careful redirect map is the best protection for traffic you've earned.

Which payment gateways can you integrate?

We regularly set up Stripe, PayPal, Mollie and Klarna, along with Apple Pay, Google Pay and each platform's own payment service. Availability varies by platform and country, so we confirm what works for your markets during planning, then test real transactions, refunds and payment webhooks before launch.

Will I be able to manage products and orders myself?

Yes. We set up every store so your team can add products, change prices, run discounts and process orders without a developer. At handover we walk you through the admin and leave short guides for common tasks. For bigger changes later, we're a message away.

Do you set up sales tax and VAT?

Yes. We configure the platform's tax settings or connect a tax app so the correct sales tax or VAT is calculated at checkout, including on cross-border EU orders. We're developers, not accountants, so we implement the rules your accountant or tax advisor confirms for your business.
