What does a Shopify development agency do?

A Shopify development agency sets up, designs and extends Shopify stores beyond what a stock theme offers: custom Liquid themes, app integrations, checkout customization, Shopify Plus features and headless storefronts. It's for brands launching on Shopify, moving from another platform, or running a store that has hit the limits of its theme and apps.

Shopify development services we deliver

Each service below can be booked on its own or combined into a full build.

Shopify store setup

Plan selection, theme setup, navigation, collections, product import, payments (Shopify Payments, PayPal, Klarna or Mollie), shipping profiles, taxes, Shopify Markets for international selling, and only the apps you need. You get a store ready to take real orders on launch day.

Custom Shopify theme development

Themes built from scratch or extended from Shopify's Horizon theme, using Liquid and Online Store 2.0. Your team gets sections and theme blocks to rearrange in the editor, metafields and metaobjects for content like size guides or specs, and no hard-coded text.

Theme customization and fixes

Like your premium theme but missing features? We add custom sections and product-page elements, and document every edit so a theme update doesn't quietly wipe out the work.

Shopify apps and integrations

Custom apps built on the Shopify Admin API and webhooks that connect your store to an ERP, CRM, 3PL, POS or marketing platform. We also audit installed apps, a common source of slow pages and strange bugs.

Checkout Extensibility and Shopify Functions

Custom checkout fields, delivery rules, payment-method logic, tiered discounts and post-purchase offers built with checkout UI extensions and Shopify Functions. Shopify has been phasing out Shopify Scripts and checkout.liquid in favor of these tools; if your store relied on either, we rebuild that logic. Some checkout changes need Shopify Plus — we'll say which up front.

Shopify Plus development

B2B catalogs with company accounts and price lists, multiple markets, Shopify Flow automations, expansion stores and the deepest checkout control Shopify offers. We'll also tell you plainly if Plus isn't worth it yet.

Headless Shopify with Hydrogen or Next.js

When a theme can't deliver the experience you want, we build a custom React storefront on Shopify's Storefront API — Hydrogen hosted on Oxygen, or a Next.js front end when the store lives inside a larger site. Shopify still runs products, checkout and orders.

Migrations to Shopify

From WooCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, Magento or BigCommerce: products, customers, blog content, order history where possible, and a full 301 redirect map so old links keep working.

Speed and conversion optimization

Core Web Vitals fixes, app cleanup, and conversion improvements to product pages, cart and search — guided by Google Analytics 4 data and session recordings, not hunches.

Signs it's time to bring in a Shopify expert

  • You've installed a dozen apps to patch gaps, and the store has slowed down.
  • Your theme can't show what makes your product different — bundles, comparisons, technical specs or custom options.
  • Your discounts, shipping rates or payment rules need logic Shopify's settings don't cover.
  • Someone copies orders into another system by hand every day.
  • You're moving to Shopify and can't afford to lose search rankings or customer accounts.
  • You're expanding into new countries or adding wholesale buyers.

Just starting with a small catalog? A well-configured premium theme may be all you need, and we'll recommend it over a custom build if it fits. If your shop is one part of a Wix site with bookings or member areas, Wix ecommerce development can be the simpler choice.

Why work with our Shopify developers

Honest advice on whether Shopify fits

We build on Shopify, Wix Stores, WooCommerce and headless stacks, so we don't need every project to be a Shopify project. Our ecommerce website development guide compares the platforms side by side.

Ecommerce builds with real complexity

Product configurators, financing at checkout and live data lookups are part of our recent ecommerce work — the kind of features that decide whether a store wins or loses the sale.

Clean, editable themes

Anything a marketer might change is exposed in the theme editor. Code is versioned in GitHub, and we work on a duplicate theme so your live store is never a test bench.

10+ years, 2,000+ projects

Wix Engine has been building websites and online stores since 2014 for clients in 15+ countries, with a Top Rated record on Upwork.

Our ecommerce work

Our two most recent ecommerce builds are custom Next.js stores. Purely Solutions has product configurators, financing at checkout and a live postal-code water-quality lookup. AGOBAY combines an artisan shop with an editorial magazine and event bookings.

The same team builds on Shopify: Liquid themes for stores that live in the theme editor, Shopify Functions and checkout extensions for custom rules, and the Storefront API when a store needs a custom Next.js front end.

How much does Shopify development cost?

Starts from
$800

Shopify projects with us start from $800 for a store setup on an existing theme. Custom themes, Plus features, integrations and headless builds are quoted after a call.

What affects the price:

  • Theme approach configuring a premium theme costs far less than designing and coding a custom one.
  • Catalog and migration the number of products and variants, and how clean the source data is.
  • Custom functionality checkout extensions, Shopify Functions and custom apps.
  • Integrations ERP, 3PL or CRM syncing, especially when data flows both ways.
  • Markets and languages each extra country or language adds setup and testing.

Your Shopify plan, paid theme and app subscriptions are billed directly by Shopify and the app developers. Choose a fixed-price project, a monthly retainer, or hourly work at $45/hour (minimum 40-hour block). Want a developer working inside your team? FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Shopify development agency charge?

At Wix Engine, Shopify projects start from $800 for a store setup on an existing theme. Custom theme development, Shopify Plus work, integrations and headless storefronts are priced by scope after a free call. Shopify's plan fees and app subscriptions are separate. You'll get an exact estimate within 48 hours of sending your requirements.

How long does Shopify store setup take?

A typical store takes 3–6 weeks, depending on how soon product data and content are ready. Custom themes, headless storefronts and heavily integrated builds take longer. The timeline is set in your proposal, and you get progress updates every week.

Do I need a custom Shopify theme or will a premium theme do?

A premium theme is enough for many stores, especially at launch. Custom theme development makes sense when your product needs layouts no theme offers, when you've stacked apps to fill gaps, or when your brand must stand apart from competitors on the same theme. We'll recommend the cheaper route whenever it fits.

Is Shopify Plus worth it?

Shopify Plus is worth it when you need what it uniquely offers: the deepest checkout customization, B2B selling at scale, expansion stores, or higher API limits for heavy integrations. Many growing brands are well served by Shopify's Advanced plan. We compare your requirements against each plan before you commit to an upgrade.

What is Shopify Hydrogen, and do I need a headless store?

Hydrogen is Shopify's React framework for building custom storefronts that connect to Shopify through the Storefront API, usually hosted on Shopify's Oxygen platform. It gives you full design freedom and very fast pages, but costs more to build and maintain than a theme. Most stores should start with a theme and go headless when they outgrow it.

Can you migrate my store to Shopify without losing SEO?

Yes. We migrate products, variants, customers, blog posts and order history where possible, keep page titles and meta descriptions, and set up 301 redirects from every old URL to its Shopify equivalent. Rankings can't be guaranteed during any move, but a careful redirect map is the best protection for traffic you've already earned.

Will I be able to edit the store myself after launch?

Yes. We build themes so your team can change text, images, banners, collections and page layouts in Shopify's theme editor without code. You'll get a walkthrough at handover, and we're available for bigger jobs like new features or seasonal campaigns.

Can you speed up my existing Shopify store?

Usually, yes. The most common causes are apps loading scripts on every page, oversized images and heavy theme code. We audit the store, remove or replace what's slowing it down, and measure Core Web Vitals before and after so you can see the difference.
