Wix Website Maintenance Checklist: What to Check and When

Bilal Faisal, Project Manager & Lead Developer at Wix EngineBilal FaisalProject Manager & Lead Developer · 9 min read

Wix website maintenance is lighter than on a self-hosted site, but it isn't zero. Wix runs the hosting, SSL, platform security and editor updates. You still own what makes the site useful: accurate content, working forms and automations, apps, custom code, SEO, speed, access, backups, renewals and legal pages. This Wix maintenance checklist shows how to maintain a Wix website on a schedule: weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly tasks, with the Wix tool for each.

Key takeaways

  • Wix takes care of servers, SSL and platform security. There are no plugins or server software for you to patch.
  • The biggest risks are quiet ones: a form that stopped sending, a failed automation, an expired card on a domain renewal, a former employee who still has access.
  • Site History restores pages and code, not CMS collection data. Collections have their own backups.
  • A weekly 15-minute pass catches most of the problems that cost leads.
  • DIY works for simple sites. Sites with Velo code, Wix Stores or bookings usually justify a maintenance plan.

Wix website maintenance: what Wix handles and what you do

Wix maintains the platform; you maintain the website.

Wix takes care of:

You still own: content accuracy, forms and automations, apps and their subscriptions, Velo code and API keys, SEO and speed, who has access, CMS backups, renewals, legal pages and accessibility. The rest of this guide is a schedule for that list.

Weekly Wix maintenance tasks

Once a week, spend about 15 minutes confirming that the parts of the site that bring in money still work.

Test your main form

Submit your contact or quote form from your phone, then open Forms & Submissions in the dashboard and confirm it arrived. On the new Wix Forms, the submissions table has Submissions, Spam and Trash tabs. Check Spam for real leads that were filtered out.

Check your automations

Form notification emails are built on Wix Automations. Open each important automation's summary and check its run log. "Ended with issues" means one or more actions failed; "Failed" means nothing ran. Logs for completed runs are kept for 30 days, so a weekly look catches problems while the details are still there.

Check orders, bookings and code errors

If you run Wix Stores, review new and unfulfilled orders. If you take bookings, confirm the calendar shows the right availability. On sites with Velo code, open Wix Logs in the dashboard. They capture frontend and backend events, with stack traces for errors. A new error repeating every few minutes usually means a broken integration.

Monthly Wix maintenance tasks

Once a month, review content, SEO, speed and analytics. This is where most Wix website upkeep happens, and it takes one to two hours on a typical small business site.

Update content and CMS collections

Read your key pages as a customer would. Fix old prices, past events, departed staff and expired offers, then archive or update stale CMS items.

Before bulk edits or a CSV import, take a manual CMS backup. Wix keeps weekly automatic collection backups (the three most recent) and lets you create up to three manual ones. Each backup includes your collections' content, fields, settings and views. Wix App collections, such as Stores or Bookings data, aren't covered.

Run SEO checks

Open the Wix SEO & GEO dashboard. Its SEO Assistant gives prioritized fixes for content, structure and SEO settings, and "Site performance on Google" shows clicks and impressions. It requires a site verified with Google Search Console.

In Search Console itself, check the Pages report for new 404s and server errors, and the Performance report for pages that dropped month over month. Wix's Site Inspection report, built on Search Console data, also shows each page's index status inside your dashboard.

For every 404 that used to be a real page, add a 301 redirect in the URL Redirect Manager (SEO & GEO, then Tools and settings). Redirects need a connected custom domain. Wix creates a redirect automatically when you change a page slug, but not when you change a Wix Blog post slug. For a full broken-link check, run a crawler such as Screaming Frog over the live site. For the settings to get right in the first place, see our Wix SEO checklist.

Check site speed

Open the Site Speed dashboard. "Real visitor experience" shows Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP and CLS) from your actual visitors; a second section runs a Google PageSpeed simulation. Real visitor data needs at least 10 sessions in the last seven days. If scores slip, our guide on why a Wix site gets slow covers the fixes.

Review analytics and store reports

In Wix Analytics, compare the Traffic Overview with last month. If you use Google Analytics 4, confirm key events like form submissions still record.

Store owners should also open the Wix Stores reports. The Low Inventory report shows items expected to run out of stock in the next 14 days, and the abandoned cart reports show where shoppers leave. Place an occasional test order to confirm checkout, shipping and confirmation emails.

Quarterly Wix maintenance tasks

Every three months, review what changes slowly: apps, access, code, backups and accessibility.

Review installed apps

Open Manage Apps and ask whether each app is still used and still paid for. When you remove a paid app, cancel its subscription first, because deleting an app doesn't cancel the subscription.

Review roles and permissions

In Roles & Permissions, remove former staff, freelancers and agencies, and give everyone the narrowest role that fits. Removing a collaborator or changing a role takes a few clicks from the More Actions menu. Turn on 2-step verification for the owner account; Wix supports the Wix app, SMS, email and authenticator apps.

Check Velo code and secrets

If your site has custom code:

  • Keep API keys in the Secrets Manager, not in page code. Only Admin (Co-Owner) and Website Manager collaborators can access it, so review who holds those roles.
  • Rotate keys that a former team member could see.
  • Look for Velo APIs that now have SDK replacements. Wix has started a gradual transition from Velo APIs to the Wix JavaScript SDK; those Velo versions still work but won't receive future updates.
  • Test integrations end to end: payment webhooks, CRM syncs, emails.

Our Wix Velo security guide goes deeper on permissions and secrets.

Take a backup snapshot

Wix says it's not possible to back up a site outside Wix. Use these instead:

  • Site History records every save and publish and who made it. Restoring an earlier version erases changes made after it, and doesn't change CMS collection content. Rename key versions, such as "before Q4 redesign," so you can find them.
  • Duplicate Site (Site Actions on the dashboard home) creates a copy in your account. It skips store orders, contacts and members, email campaigns, third-party app settings and Velo secrets, and doesn't update when you edit the original. Duplicating a Wix Studio site requires a Studio workspace.

Run the Accessibility Wizard

In the editor, go to Settings, then Accessibility Wizard, then Scan Site, and work through the "Detected issues" and "Manual tasks" tabs. It doesn't scan everything (Velo elements and side carts, for example), works only in the site's primary language, and may miss some color contrast problems, so check new pages by hand too.

Yearly Wix maintenance tasks

Once a year, check renewals, legal pages and your SEO foundation.

Domain and premium plan renewals

Open Premium Subscriptions in your Wix account. Domains bought from Wix renew automatically 30 days before they expire when auto-renew is on. Confirm auto-renew, a current card, and a renewal email address someone reads. If your domain is registered elsewhere, check it there.

Re-read your privacy policy, terms and refund policy against how the site works today: new forms, apps and tracking. Wix doesn't provide legal templates and recommends a legal professional review your documents.

For cookies, go to Privacy & Cookies. Wix's current consent banner is provided by Usercentrics; the basic version is free and includes site scans. Re-scan after adding apps or tracking codes.

Refresh your SEO foundation

Revisit your keywords in the SEO Setup Checklist in the SEO & GEO dashboard. Connecting Search Console through it requires a Premium plan and a connected domain. Review titles and descriptions on your top pages, and decide which old posts to update, merge or redirect.

DIY or hire Wix site maintenance services?

Do it yourself if your site is small, changes a few times a year and has no custom code. Hire help when the site makes money every day, has code, or nobody on your team owns it.

DIY works when you have a brochure site with one contact form, no Velo code, store or booking system, and someone who will actually block 15 minutes a week and two hours a month.

Hiring makes sense when:

  • The site has Velo code, API integrations or custom backend logic.
  • You run Wix Stores or bookings, where a broken checkout costs sales by the hour.
  • Updates wait weeks because nobody owns the website.
  • Your original developer left and nobody knows how the code works.
  • You need regular changes like landing pages, not only checks.

If your site changes twice a year, you probably don't need a monthly plan. A yearly review is enough.

How Wix Engine can help

Our Wix website maintenance plans cover this checklist for you, run by a Wix Legend Partner team that has worked with Wix since 2014. Essential ($99/month) includes 2 hours of updates and a monthly backup and health check. Growth ($249/month) adds 6 hours, priority response within 1 business day and a monthly report. Pro ($499/month) adds 12 hours, same-day response and Velo code maintenance. Plans are month-to-month, and extra work is billed at $45/hour.

For growth work beyond routine checks, see our Wix SEO services, or hire a Wix developer part-time or full-time.

FAQ

Does a Wix website need maintenance?

Yes, but less than a self-hosted site. Wix handles hosting, SSL, platform security and updates, so there's nothing to patch. You still need to keep content accurate, test forms and automations, review apps and access, watch SEO and speed, and keep renewals current.

How do I back up a Wix website?

Use three tools together. Site History restores earlier saved or published versions of your pages and code. Duplicate Site creates a copy in your account, minus orders, contacts, app settings and secrets. CMS backups cover collection data, which Site History doesn't restore. Wix doesn't support backing up a site outside Wix.

How often should I check my Wix site?

Weekly for forms, automations, orders and code errors; monthly for content, SEO, speed and analytics; quarterly for apps, access, backups and accessibility; yearly for renewals and legal pages. The weekly checks matter most, because a broken form or failed automation loses leads silently.

How much does Wix website maintenance cost?

DIY costs time: about 15 minutes a week and one to two hours a month for a small site. Our managed plans run $99/month (Essential), $249/month (Growth) and $499/month (Pro, for sites with custom code, stores or bookings).

Can I maintain my Wix website myself?

Yes, if your site is simple and someone owns the schedule. Every task here uses your Wix dashboard or Google Search Console, and none needs coding unless your site already has Velo code. Bring in help when the site has custom code, sells online, or updates keep slipping.
