Google AI Mode Update: What the October 2026 Changes Mean for Your Website

The Google AI Mode update from October 15, 2026 changes how AI Mode and AI Overviews link to websites. Google added more inline links and moved them higher in answers. It is also testing a section for official sites, adding thumbnails to related links, and expanding news carousels. For a small business, the goal hasn't changed: be the clearest, most trustworthy answer to your customers' questions.

Key takeaways

  • On October 15, 2026, Google announced five link changes to AI Mode and AI Overviews: more and higher inline links, a test of an official-sites section, news carousels in more places, thumbnails on related links, and a test of creator profile links on videos.
  • Google didn't share how big the inline-link increase is, any click data, or how it decides which sites count as "official."
  • Google's Search Central docs say there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Mode or AI Overviews. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Normal SEO best practices apply.
  • The practical work: answer-first pages, accurate structured data, crawlable text and a current Business Profile.
  • Search Console's Generative AI report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. Clicks stay in the normal "Web" data.

What changed in the Google AI Mode update?

Google made links inside AI answers more visible. The announcement came in a post titled "More ways to connect with the web from Search" by Hema Budaraju, VP of Product Management, on October 15, 2026. It covers five changes.

Inline links are links attached to words or phrases inside an AI response. Google reported "continued and substantial increases" in how often they appear, and will show them higher in more responses. For service businesses this matters most: more chances for your link to sit next to the sentence it supports.

2. A test of an official-sites section

For some task-based searches, Google is testing a section at the top of the response that shows the one or two official sites for that task. Each link comes with a short note on why it's useful. Google gave no examples, but think of searches with one clear right place to go, such as where you book, apply or pay.

3–5. News carousels, thumbnails and creator profiles

  • News carousels of timely articles are reaching more locations and languages and highlight a user's Preferred Sources. Google said use of Preferred Sources has grown more than 7x since the start of 2026. This mostly affects publishers.
  • Related links at the end of some responses now have image thumbnails and a more clickable design, so a good featured image matters a little more.
  • Video results in AI Mode are testing clickable creator and publisher names that link to their Search profiles.

What the update doesn't tell you

Google gave no numbers. As Search Engine Journal reported, the post doesn't give the size of the inline-link increase, any click-through or traffic data, or how "official" sites are chosen. It also doesn't say when the two tests might expand.

Search Engine Journal also pointed out a reporting detail: Search Console gives all links in an AI Overview a single position. So if your inline link moves higher inside an answer, your reported position won't change. Don't expect the update to show up as a ranking jump in your reports.

The honest reading: Google has made links in AI answers easier to see and click. That helps sites that already answer questions well. It doesn't help a site that isn't cited at all, so the work below still comes first.

Other AI Mode changes in October 2026

Another October 2026 AI Mode change worth knowing about is ads. On October 28, Google announced in Ads in AI Mode expand to new markets that ads in AI Mode are scaling to Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. Brazil, Mexico and the UK are planned for Q4 2026. Google also launched multiturn ads in the US, which can appear on answers to follow-up questions. Ads are labeled "Sponsored." Search Engine Roundtable covered the same announcement.

In those countries, AI answers will now share space with paid placements, which makes organic citations more competitive.

How to appear in Google AI Mode: what Google says

Google says you don't need to do anything special. Its Search Central page on AI features and your website states there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

The technical bar is the same as normal search:

  • The page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet.
  • You don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup. That rules out paying for an llms.txt file to get into AI Mode.

The best practices Google lists are familiar: allow crawling in robots.txt and your CDN or firewall, link to content internally, provide a good page experience, keep important content as text, support it with images and video, keep structured data matching the visible page, and keep Merchant Center and Business Profile information current.

One more detail explains why lower-ranked pages sometimes get cited. Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews may use "query fan-out": they run several related searches across subtopics to build one answer. A page that clearly answers one sub-question can be linked even if it doesn't rank first for the main query.

John Mueller's Search Central post on performing well in Google's AI experiences adds one more point: focus on unique, non-commodity content. A page that repeats what ten other pages say gives Google no reason to link to you.

AI Overviews SEO: 7 practical steps for service websites

Most of the work is good SEO, done carefully. Here is what we'd do on a small-business or service site after this update.

1. Check that Google can use your pages

Run your key pages through URL Inspection in Search Console. Confirm they're indexed and that nothing blocks snippets. A nosnippet tag, data-nosnippet on the wrong element or a tight max-snippet limit can keep a page out of AI answers. Also check your firewall or CDN bot settings, not just robots.txt.

Search Console also has a site-level Search generative AI setting. Search Engine Roundtable reported that this control, which lets site owners opt out of AI features, was live for all websites by August 31, 2026. Unless you've made a deliberate choice to opt out, make sure your site is included.

2. Put the answer first

Start each key page with a direct 40–60 word answer to the main question: what you do, for whom, where and what it costs. Then start each H2 with a one- or two-sentence answer before the detail. Inline links attach to specific phrases, so short, clear sentences are easier to link.

We did this on the Canada Medical Notes and US Medical Notes project. The home page opens with a direct answer to "What is an online doctor's note in Canada?", and each province and city page covers that area's sick-leave rules. The content was written so Google and AI search tools can quote it.

3. Be the obvious official page for your own tasks

Google hasn't said how it picks sites for the official-sites test. But a business can only be the official source for tasks it clearly owns: booking with you, your prices, contacting you, your service area. Give each task its own page with a clear title and the facts in HTML text, and keep your business details identical across your site and Business Profile.

4. Use structured data that matches the page

Structured data helps Google understand who you are and what a page is about. Use Organization or LocalBusiness markup, plus Article or Product markup where it fits, and make sure it matches what's visible on the page. Google says no special schema is required for AI features, so treat it as accuracy work, not a shortcut.

5. Keep your Business Profile current

Google names Business Profile and Merchant Center in its AI features guidance. Check hours, services, categories, service areas and photos. For local searches, this is often the first source Google trusts about you.

6. Add real images and video

Related links now show thumbnails, and Google recommends supporting text with images and video. Use your own photos of your work, team and premises, with descriptive file names and alt text. If you publish videos, look at whether you're eligible for a Search profile.

7. Publish what only you know

Your prices, process, service areas and the problems you fix every week. That's the unique content Google asks for, and competitors can't copy it.

How to track AI Mode traffic in Search Console

Use the new Generative AI performance report for impressions, and the normal Performance report for clicks. Google launched the report in June 2026 and, according to its Search Central announcement, rolled it out to all websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026.

What it shows:

What you get Details
Metric Impressions: how often links to your site were shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode
Breakdowns Pages, countries, devices and dates (hourly, daily, weekly or monthly)
Not included Clicks and queries

Google's help page for the report says that if you can't see it, your site usually hasn't had enough generative AI impressions yet. That alone is a useful signal.

Clicks from AI features are counted inside the regular Performance report, under the "Web" search type, and can't be separated there. So measure what happens after the click with GA4 conversions for calls, forms and bookings. Google says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, with people spending more time on the site.

Once a month, note which pages gain or lose AI impressions, search your main service questions in AI Mode to see if you're linked, and compare organic leads. For ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini tracking, see how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT.

FAQ

What is the October 2026 Google AI Mode update?

It is a set of link changes Google announced on October 15, 2026 for AI Mode and AI Overviews. Google added more inline links and placed them higher in answers, began testing an official-sites section, expanded news carousels, added thumbnails to related links and started testing creator profile links on video results.

How do I get my website to appear in Google AI Mode?

Make sure your pages are indexed and eligible to show a snippet, then follow normal SEO best practices. Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimizations. In practice, answer questions directly, keep important content as crawlable text, use accurate structured data and keep your Business Profile up to date.

Can I see AI Mode traffic in Google Search Console?

Partly. The Generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date, but not clicks or queries. Clicks from AI features are counted inside the normal Performance report under the "Web" search type and can't be separated there.

Will the AI Mode update increase my website traffic?

It might, but Google hasn't published click or traffic data for these changes. More visible links help only if your pages are cited in the first place. Track AI impressions in Search Console and leads in GA4 for a few months before drawing conclusions.
